Important upgrade of FC servers to reduce lag

Post by Chrisax »

BIGGER HAMSTERS!!

(Source FC)

" Downtime 21st June 2006 - Server Upgrades
This Wednesday (the 21st of June) we will be taking down the live dimensions for the installation and configuration of a new database solution for both Rimor and Atlantean. As we have mentioned in previous updates we have been acutely aware of the performance issues and this is the first stage in trying to ensure that these issues do not continue.

During the downtime new hardware will be deployed to better handle the volume of database traffic. This is primarily where the issues were occuring, when your game client is talking to our database servers (where the character information is stored), it is currently experiencing delays at certain times that have caused the 'lag' spikes you have seen in game when your actions dont register on the server.

The upgrade should hopefully resolve that situation and prevent those type of delays. We will be moving to a new, hopefully even more flexible and robust configuration for this traffic as part of the work.

Of course with any update of this scale we will have to ask for your patience whilst we perform these upgrades. The downtime on Wednesday is expected to last eight hours, and we will of course keep you updated with our progress.

The downtime will start at 10:00 CEST

In addition we have also now ordered a number of new servers. These machines will be deployed onto the live dimensions as soon as they arrive and have been tested. They should significantly increase the processing power of the dimensions (we expect it to be somewhere in the region of almost double their current capacity). This should improve general performance on the servers once they are deployed."

i wonder if this upgrade will tackle the issue where your character lvl is different from the database lvl...currently FC database is running 4-6 days behind in registering your lvl..

Woot !! But also uh oh. all bots currently rely on being able to contact the data servers. An upgrade means a change in system which means needing a bot update :/ Hopefully bob and westap would update themselves using the ign auto update but i dont think apraids will :/

My guess is that gor it to be worth bothering to release LE they probably need servers to handle more traffic.

sadly, according to some posts on the official forums, this upgrade will not affect graphical lag.
there are major issues with the client. ex: i am in a superior shop facing away from the Trade-room door. when somebody enters there...my AO freezes for 1-2 seconds.
my friend, he knows more about computers, told me that the game loads
things even if they are not needed.

but, any upgrade is good news. that means something will go smoother :)
so, two thumbs up for FC.

much to my surprise, the game runs much smoother after the 8 h downtime. i no longer lag in cities even when using window mode.
even borealis is more is more forgiving
whatever they did seems to have fixed things for me.
