the problems of late with hardware sound cards is due to vista compatibility issues with drivers and vista but 98% of these problems of been ironed out...when i first got vista 7months ago my X-fi extreme gamer sound card wouldn't work right because of driver issues, now all drivers and software works fine

Check out asus xonar DX2 dock just as good analogue outs if not better than
xfi fatal1ty and linux support.

Btw analogue out is much better than any other connection type for audio
if you are going to use 7.1 sound or TrueHD sound.

With the aforementioned card, vista works out of the box as well and EAX 5.0
doesn't need any extra software running (smaller overhead).

Google "asus xonar DX2 reviews"

Sounds like its time to start saving the pennys again :)

Currently using an optical link to a Teac home theatre amp. Altho its only running 3.1 at the moment due to me not getting round buying/mounting the 2 rear speakers. Also need to save for a good quality bass unit as the current one is rubbish.

maybe a combined swear and beer jar?

true core, if i wanted optical output i would use cheapest solution i could find because that aint no DA-convertion and will not have performance losses like analogue outputs

quick check at the asus xonar, 118 dB SND is pretty damn good given 120 dB SND is no noise at all. This what i value the highest for the system im planning atm so thanks for sharing!
