Seagate hard drives disaster - read if you have a recent one

Post by Chrisax »

I can't remember any serious issues with Seagate hard drives in the last ten years or even before. They have been my main choice for years.

Unfortunately, a BIG incident just occurred.

On many models, mostly manufactured in December 2008 but possibly before that, a firmware error can make the data inaccessible. The data is not lost according to Seagate, but the disk just don't respond.
A number of Seagate hard drives from the following families may become inaccessible when the host system is powered on:
  • Barracuda 7200.11
    DiamondMax 22
    Barracuda ES.2 SATA
Once a drive has become affected the data becomes inaccessible to users but the data is not deleted. Seagate has isolated this issue to a firmware bug affecting drives from these families manufactured through December 2008.

Please use the following tools and instructions to determine if you have one of the affected products. If your drive is affected, we recommend that you update the firmware on the disk drive to prevent this condition.
The following models are affected but only if they use some specific versions of the firmware:
  • Barracuda 7200.11
    ?ST31000340AS?
    ST31000640AS?
    ST3750330AS?

    ST3320613AS?

    ?ST31000340NS

    ?ST3500320NS
    ?ST3250310NS

and read everything, especially points 1), 2), and 3)

And, guess who bought a Barracuda Barracuda 7200.11?... Yes I have some tests to do tomorrow.

Had one of the affected drives as well, thanks a lot for helping me catch a potential disaster chris :)
The drive was performing well thus far but had some power management issues but never enough of a nuisance
to make me look for a solution.
cheers

Hello Core! Good to see you! :D And good to know I helped you.

Guess what: Ippokratis and Kazuyia are willing to get back to AO, and they asked about you two days ago! Kazuyia was online on a new character, as he and his brother are trying to get their old accounts back (they forgot the codes). I gave them some advice on how to do that.
