Can't log in to AO.......

Post by Kosstoss »

I wonder if anyone can help me.

At the moment i cant log on to AO due to a graphics drivers issue.

On the GUI window in the settings i have 2 choices...

Primary Display Driver - RGB Emulation
Primary Display Driver - Direct3D HAL

My PC is quite old a Packard Bell IMedia 5070 and i have recently reinstalled windows.

At the moment i am using an old graphics driver and have scoured the internet including Packard Bell home site looking for an updated driver that would be compatible but no joy.

Any suggestions?

Start --> Run --> enter "dxdiag" (without quotes) and run it.

This will start the program dxdiag, it may take a while to load. That'll make a list of information about your system (including videocard). I believe you can let the program dump the results to a file.

You open that file (notepad) and paste the results to this thread in
your result here
tags. Then we have a bit more of a clue what could be wrong.

PS: If I understand correctly, AO used to work before, but you had to format C and reinstall windows + AO (and now AO doesn't work anymore)?

1) You reinstalled Windows but did you reinstall AO? AO requires a reinstall in you reinstalled windows totally.

2) Have you tried to use windows update (usually in the start menu "Windows Update", if not, a search in the help system should show you where it is)
When windows update is running, gor for manual update (custom update) check if they offer any hardware (driver) update. Select it for install, and in fact you can probably also select anything that they call "important" (this is anyhow what would be installed if you went for auto updating)

All this assuming that your computer ACTUALLY is a Packard Bell iMedia 5070. Be VERY certain of this before you proceed... since your DXDIAG dump says your videocard is from a different brand and type than the Packard Bell website claims it to be.

-----------

http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/ ... 801&g=2000

Your videocard is an onboard SiS650.

Original videocard drivers (which you seem to be using) predate 2004. I'm pretty certain that's not good. :) Packard Bell offers drivers from February 2004, that's not um.. very new either. You can try them anyway, but I'd recommend searching on:

http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/ ... P480410801

-----------

Then we could go directly to the website of SiS for drivers:

http://www.sis.com/download/download_st ... ge791.y=13

Looks like your "videocard" is IGP, something I think means chipset+videocard in one. Manufacturer has the 3.73 version of drivers for you, which is from March 2006.

------------

Off to google we go, and we find that there's a version 3.75 from December 2006 available from a third-party-website:

http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/23607 ... nload.html

------------

Now. I have no crystal globe to see if the driver is the right one for you. So be definitely warned about that. If it fails you'll have to roll back at the very least, reinstall again in the worst case. Hopefully that won't happen.

The 3rd-party website seems to have a newer driver to download; however I would use the official release over a 3rd party-release any day, unless the 3rd party-release offers a feature I ABSOLUTELY need to use my computer.

So here's my personal opinion: try the driver from the SiS website (3.73). If that doesn't work, you CAN try the 3.75 version but do take care because there's no way to check if it's not bugged in some way, the official site probably doesn't offer it to download for a reason!

PS: If you want your puter speed to go up, consider upgrading your RAM.. 512 MB is really, really low for a computer even that age. Best would be to get a new PC altogether when the new engine comes out though, one with a real videocard (and not an onboard thing that leeches your system's RAM instead of having their own VRAM). That's when I'll be upgrading my own computer, too.
