howdy ap! i'm trying to make a comeback, but am having trouble (i'm on a macbook pro) so i thought i would reach out. over the past couple days i've been lurking the various boards. using wine (technically winebottler if that makes a difference) i got the directory setup and matched and can get past the login screen to actually see my cast of chubby nanomages. when i choose a character to login i get an error (3d error) and everything crashes.

please help!!!

i'm open to any solution and would not be heartbroken if it did not include wine. i stopped coding a loooong time ago and find wine confusing with its setup. even tho i tend to lean towards nanomages, i'm not overly tech savvy. i'd say about average on the software side, so please feel free to talk to me like i'm stupid. i won't be offended and it will probably move things along faster :) the sooner i get back in the sooner i can seriously (yeah yeah) level up a toon and smack around omni.

Side OMG :luv: :luv: :luv: It would be great to have you back!

Unfortunately, personally, I know nothing about AO on Macs but some AP's should. I guess Mud used a Mac at some point.

So, if I understand you well, you can get the launcher up and running but it's ONLY when the game itself starts that you experience a crash. So when you should normally see a black screen with the AO logo. You said a "3d error": do you get any specific message? Is it just AO that dies or is the whole computer affected?

Could you tell us what your Mac is exactly, so we know the processor, and also what Apple operating system you're using.

Also, check this generic article; maybe it could help:

How to Run Windows on a Mac
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2344661,00.asp
(several pages)

I'll ask around and see if I can find someone to help you. :)

Thanks Chris! I'll check out that article. I'm going to try bootcamp which partitions a portion of the drive and scares the crap out of me but... oh well.

Yes, it goes to the black screen and then *poof*

Last night I had a very specific "3d" error. Now when I run it I get a very generic "anarchy online has crashed" message.

The bug report showed this if it makes any sense to folks.

What version of wine are you running?

AO only works in versions 1.3.7 and later. And if you want mouselook, you also need to use a patch which you can get here.

Overall, Bootcamp is probably gonna be an easier solution. Too bad, since AO worked flawlessly with Wine prior to the ingame shop and input changes. :\

Side!!!! My NT brother!

I play on a Macbook pro...

all those other ways of playing are crap...they break and are crazy hard to maintain.

Bootcamp brother, it's easy, very easy. Grab a copy of Windows Vista or newer, or even XP if it is SP3 and start up Bootcamp it will walk you through the rest.

If you need to buy one look online for an OEM version, way cheaper.

Mud nailed it: Bootcamp.

If buying XP or Vista isn't an option use Wine, but not thru winebottler. You might have to reinvigorate those "coding" skills.

I'm not on a Mac, but wine-1.3.18 + a patch for the mouselook issue has AO running flawlessly for me.

The Awesomium problem is "fixed" (the game runs fine except for the ingame shop), the problem is the input system, so that using the mouse to turn and look around doesn't work without the patch.

update...

after lots of cursing, this is where i'm at.
1. picked up the 32bit version of windows 7 for $15 from the campus bookstore.
2. then attempted bootcamp a few times with varying partition sizes ( i went from a 50GB partition to a 20GB) while it told me files couldn't be moved even with 110GB+ free space. *insert more cursing*
3. add idefrag for $29ish and HOURS letting it do its thing only to return back to #2.
4. bootcamp had the last laugh by telling me files could still not be moved, which seems to leave the only other option as a full save + format + rebuild.
5. more cursing...

tomorrow i'll hand the aluminum box to the campus techs for them to mess with... after backing up my thesis, data, and other crap. this is ridiculous

wow side, it literally took me 10 min to do windows install on my Mac. Did you print out their guide they provide in Bootcamp? also just do a google search, there are even some youtube videos of people doing it.

Something is rotten in the kingdom of your Mac.... It shouldn't be that hard. Hope the techs can help you. Also defragmenting for hours?! Hours?! There is maybe a software interfering.

Could you elaborate on "fixed"? Details? Links? What did they change?

Here you go, it appears that it's completely fixed now, for a while the item shop wouldn't open, but it seems that that problem has been fixed in recent patches too. So just the mouselook problem left. :p

Never had any problems related to the In-Game shop using wine 1.3.18. I did have patch it for the rawinput mouselook issue tho. The in-game shop was an awesomium.dll issue, same as with Eve Online users.
