You need a beta invite.

This is currently a closed beta. If you have per-ordered, you should be invited to public beta weekends in May.

If you registered long ago for TSW and/or got a TSW beta clearance by subscribing to some offers (AoC, testing Bloodline Champions, ...), then you should at some point get an email with a closed beta key. Before April 30 anyhow.

Is it like a standard pre-order in that, if I HATE the Beta, I can cancel?

Or is it like alot of Funcom stuff where, because they handle their own distribution, once you pay ... you've paid?

I'd buy a Grandmaster and then cancel if I dislike what I see ... but I won't go Grandmaster if I can't test it out.

You have the ability to pre-order, and this comes with some advantages (some purely commercial, some more interesting) that are listed on the offers page. One of this advantages is to be able to join the beta weekends. But this is not a "taste and decide" thing. If you have pre-ordered, it's done.

But we can't call that a "shotgun wedding" because, for now three years, they have offered the possibility to be in the "closed" (but nevertheless public) beta by just registering on the TSW site (still can be slightly random), beta-testing their small games (sure), subscribing to some offers in AoC (one year subscription, sure), etc.

No one in the beta now is there because they pre-ordered.

THAT SAID... /rant mode ON

I want to say that I'm furious about the way ALL gaming companies have now perverted the very spirit of Betas.

Betas are now a way to attract people, and advertise the game, create a buzz. It's somewhat stupid because they show a product that is not finished but it seems that the buzz effect (NDA... lol) overcomes the effect of negative comments.

Of course, it's also a way to get opinions from much more people and it's the only positive thing.

But, come on... how do you want to still test something when you have now 20 people running around you, interacting with the game... Kingsmouth (at least the start zone around the sheriff's office) is now close to untestable on the current public server.

Raaah... :chain:

BTW, just to clarify the "beta" thing in TSW, here is how it was handled:

1) Beta / late alpha with "some" people, for a while in 2011 and even before

2) "Closed" beta with people that showed interest in the Facebook operation (I guess) or by registering (random roll though I assume too), starting around december 2011

3) "Closed" beta but open to more people: it's the one now, until April 30

4) Public beta: sometime in May; details unknown

5) Beta weekends: May / June, in addition to the Public beta

I've been signed up on their web page and Facebook stuff for a long time now ... so yeah, I'm not expecting to get in until something public opens up. No worries. I just don't see sinking cash into another game right now until I've actually seen it function and have an idea how much content it has.

SWTOR has its issues, but it is plenty to keep me busy given my current casual play schedule. I don't know if I'd bother with 2 games simultaneously right now.

I received an email from Funcom support, there has been progress for me. My account is now "frozen" and not "banned". Thats good. I think at this point I wait until pre-order people can play in the beta.

Frozen usually just means "unpaid" or that a payment is pending. So you should now be able to activate / create / reactivate normally.

Don't wait until the last minute to pre-order if you want to, because beta invites for pre-orders will be sent on the basis of the dates of orders.

the saga continues, I am now dealing with Lead GM Sojourn. my paypal payment was definitely sent but funcom knows nothing about it. I sent them more details about the paypal payment and they are researching. something tells me that I will not be put in the beta weekends queue until this is all sorted :-( I have mentioned in a number of the emails and IM conversations (there have been MANY) that I hope to get into those beta weekends

You lost me...; Is your AO account fixed? I mean, inactive because you don't pay at the moment but ready to be re-actiavted at any time?

Is it only the pre-order for TSW missing in your (their actuelly) records?

I have no idea when I was "placed in line" for open beta weekends. I'm assuming just today.
