Away from AO a short moment: Monitor died

Post by Chrisax »

/mode Murphy's law ON

My LCD monitor decided it had to die one month after the end of the 3 years warranty period. (The skills of some engineers amaze me!). I remember I kept a perfectly working NEC Multisync 20 inches CRT monitor during 12 years...

So I have to find the time to choose a new model, order it or go to the shop and buy it, and install it. Funny thing is I might have to change my video card as I'm not sure it supports the widescreen monitors of today very well... The other funny thing is I wanted to change the whole system sometimes next spring and get totally up-to-date hardware, and now I have to patch this one in emergency. #-o

I don't think I want to move a monitor from work to home and back until this is fixed. And my laptop is 300Km away atm (Murphy's law someone?!).

To add insult to injury, I have an eyes examination in a few hours that will make me unable to work on this issue today. Hello Murphy again! =D>

So, I'm afraid I have to be away for a few days :( I'll connect an old, small monitor, and I'll try to log and and say hello, and I should be able to use the forums, but no way I can seriously play.

Well, so don't wonder about where I am... I'm after a new monitor and possibly a new video card.

Please tell others so no one thinks I'm playing WoW

LMAO,

Chris if i where you i wouldn't even consider looking into an old CRT screen. Rather just rest & revitalize imo.

Don't stress AP will be here when you back & FYI some parts in LCD's are dirt cheap to replace so maybe get your screen checked out.

Hi, Peter. What's happening? We need to talk about your TPS reports. Yeah. The coversheet. I know, I know. Uh, Bill talked to me about it.
Yeah. Did you get that memo?
Yeah. I've already taken care of it so it's not even really a problem anymore.

Dang it I hate to see people go to the dark side.

So, did you make a level 70 rogue yet?

I know some chinese gold farmers, they are the cheapest gold around afaik.

Chris, good luck with your eyes. Mine have been getting worse since all I do is stare at a monitor at work for 8 hours then come home and stare at a monitor for another 7-8 hours.

Maybe it's time to take a break? Like, maybe do some field work or something.

Last time I was doign field work, I twinked noobastrad, and RL'd pande while sitting in athens, cuz everytime I stopped looking straight down, I Ld'd... LOL that was funtimes, the hotel internet connection was really slow/ time out all the time.

Eyes exam showed the situation is stable and I healed up. Good thing after two years or treatment. :D Crossing fingers now.

Only temporary issue, my sight is still blurred after the examination.

I'm trying to find a decent monitor, as having the old one repaired would take too long (I'll do it probably but later). I have to explore because I didn't think I'd bought a new screen before May or something, so I didn't care about the current models.

I need to find one today. #-o

And NO, FGS I do not play that **** WoW. Never!

I don't know what your budget is on a new monitor obviously, but I can really really recommend the brand Eizo. It's an expensive brand, yes, but you get alot for your money. 5 year on-site warranty, functional and minimalistic design, and of course, very high image quality, which also might help if you have problems with your eyes. Most of them even have automatic brightness correction, so it will automatically dim the background light when the room is darker.
I am using one myself, and even after almost 1.5 years of usage, i'm still enjoying my purchase every day.

Sorry if that sounded like a sales pitch, but I can really recommend them :)

Great news about the eyes chris!!

If all else fails pop onto ebay and grab a cheap screen to cover you till you upgrade teh whole system?

Or do what ive done and lose the monitor all together and just use an lcd tv :)

Thanks all for the nice words about my eyes. They are still quite tired after the examination which was a long one. So, somehow, being "monitorless" at home (except this 10 years old 15 inches CRT) for a few days is maybe not a bad thing.

About Eizo, yes, it's a great brand and it's what I use at work (along with Barco) when top quality is required, on calibrated screens. For those who don't know, be ready to pay from 2 to 5 times the price of a "regular" brand for Eizo and Barco.

For the time being, I'll go for something simpler at home. I already wondered about getting a top monitor for my home, maybe next Spring... not sure if I really need it though. I'm looking for some decent 22 inches Wide Screen.

About a TV... well, my TV is not in the same room as my comp, so screens have to be separate ones. ;) But getting a TV screen for a comp... dunno... something to consider for the future maybe.

As gorgeous as that Eizo 29" is ... paying almost $2,000 (27") to over $5,000 (30") for a monitor definitely won't be in my budget. I'm happy enough with my 29" 1920x1200 HP for $450 :)

Would love the features, like the 1200x1600 split input, etc etc ... but wow ... no way. Now if work wanted to buy it ... but they won't :)
