Many good things. *crossing fingers*
And, yes, a video is ready to be uploaded about the new engine but FC's marketing is postponing it. GJ guys, you understood everything about AO Community...
May the marketing wants to show the video as a "premiere" at GDC next week in San Francisco, but still they should at least be clearer and announce their intentions.
News from The Game Director about the future of AO
Re: News from The Game Director about the future of AO
The server merge will be a good thing for sure. I wonder, though, what will happen to those with 1 account but more than one accounts worth on both servers combined. Will some be cut, or the number of toons per account increased. Would be a little unrealistic to give 14 toons per account though.
I doubt the graphics thing will have an impact now. There are plenty of games there with better graphics like SW and AoC, but AO still competes. For a while people would have been postponing coming back to AO until the new engine. But in this time a few games will be released that will more than likely attract them. By the time the engine is out there will be too many alternatives for it to matter that much.
I kinda miss AO, but more out of loyalty, than actually missing game play. With the way that SW provides you with rewards that help you keep your toon current, the system AO employs is just lame. AO should develop more of a story for professions or at least a 1-200 progression quest that provides more of the nano's and profession specific items.
For example nanos over 120 or so MUST either be rolled at random from boring rk that is now just blitzed or rare dyna loot and just camped and sold on gms. It would be way better to be able to do profession specific quests to get it, thus getting XP and a handy item. Also profession specific quests should either give ofab, not upgraded, or at least VP to buy ofab. Ofab is handy for your profession, essential in some spots, but certainly fills gaps in leveling if its easier to obtain. To get really good VP you still need to do bs 3 times per day, as the leveling/vp ratio at early stages for buying ofab is far too slow.
One other potential fix would be to for an NPC to be able to upgrade your Ofab at a cost. Could be one of 2 ways. Doing a quest for them and then when done you hand them your piece and they upgrade it for you. Even if only by 25 at a time. So to get 7 new pieces you need to do the quest 6 times (sleeves count as 1). Most people wouldn't even wear full ofab so repetition wouldn't be a problem, but it allows you to obtain lower ofab, upgrade it to penultimate, but then also keep it current as you level.
Option 2 would be to upgrade it, but at a cost of VP, but for a lot less than buying a new item. So to go from 25 - 50 costs less than a set of 50, but to go from 25 - 100 would cost you more than buying a set of 75 and upgrading to 100. This stops people from buying a set of 25 and then creating a 300 set with minimal VP.
My summarized postition is that if they are going to redefine the professions they need to also provide either leveling gear that is easier to get as you progress, and can be done solo. There is a huge gap from 165 to 210 where there isn't anything easily obtainable solo.

Re: News from The Game Director about the future of AO
They've explicitely said there won't be a merge to either of the existing servers but rather a transfer to a 3rd, new, server.
I would hope they would leave enough of the old servers online that any characters that don't fit on the new server would still be available at a later time.
They could also expand the number of character slots, that way they could force the move ... but if they shut down those other servers completely then old timers who aren't active would be hosed if they choose to come back later.

yes rather than a server merge, i meant a population merge to a server. I do understand they are using a new server, rather than an existing one
