SWTOR tips and tricks - post yours!

Post by Chrisax »

This is a thread to post any tips and tricks, details, etc. you can think of, in disorder, as you figure them out or find them. Everything not long enough to be a guide or a separate post.

We'll sort them later but remember the search function of our forums allows users to find infor even if it's not yet sorted.

What to post? Anything that is handy.

Things that are not easily noticed
Things in the manual / help but that no one has noticed or rarely
Little tricks and workarounds
Samml information on a place, a mission, a mob...

In fact, anything about which you said to yourself "aaaahhh... yes, that's it!"

Tips and tricks

- To take screenshots, use the “Print Screen” key on your system. Thr names may vary: “Prtscrn”, etc.

- Screenshots are store in C:\Users\C01\Documents\Star Wars - The Old Republic\Screenshots
This can't be customized it seems (?)

- To take a screenshot and remove the interface first, use ALT-Z (it's a switch for the interface)

- If you couldn't read or understand fast enough a dialogue in a cut-scene, the text is in the "other" tab in chat window

- How do I run:? You can't until level 15. At level 15, you'll get an ability (power), “Sprint”, that is a switch to make you run faster. Otherwise, you run a a relatively low speed.

- Unclaimed rewards, missed rewards: if for any reason you couldn't click to accept a quest reward; it is saved and you can access the window again bt clicking on a pedning reward button top right of the screen (visible only if something is available)

- You have to accept a quest reward to get the XP from the quest.

- Vehicles: Any vehicles available? How to get vehicles? At level 25, you'll be able to get a power for piloting Speeders / Bikes. This will come from your main trainer, at the cost of 40 000 credits (which is very expensive at this step of the progression). Then the Speeders themselves are sold on the Republic Fleet; there are a few models. The first one is at 8 000 credits (that's not cheap at all, again). The models are level-locked.
In fact, Speeders just increase your natural speed by 80% for the first one to 110% to the top one (level 50).
Speeders do NOT fly: they hover a bit over the ground.
Public taxis are available almost everywhere since start. (See the Travel tip)
Your starship is given in your main quest around level 19. It's free but you'll have to upgrade it. It's in fact a steady place and inside you have a device showing a map of the galaxy. You click on destinations (some of them can be space combat missions, like a mini arcade game).

- Equip your spaceship with upgrades level 1 as soon as you get it! This will make space missions MUCH easier.

- Travel: How do I travel?
    • - Running (enjoy) and at level 15 you can “sprint”, run clearly faster; sprinting doesn't consume anything so you can sprint all the time
      - Taxis: they are public individual transports in real-time between two taxi stations. It cost a few credits.
You must discover s Taxi station before being able to use it, except a few that will be already known: r-click the station droid to do that. Don't forget!
      - Quick transportation: this is a power given at start. You can use it to go to any points on the same planet where you have registered your self already by clicking on a Quick Transportation” machine, usually not far from taxis. These machines are not always very visible. Don't forget to click. This skill has a cooldown (around 20 minutes I guess, need to check)
      - Speeders / bikes: at level 25, you'll be able to buy a speeder. It's expensive. (See the vehicle tip)
      - Your spaceship: around level 19, you'll be given one by your main quest line. (See the vehicle tip)
- Map: You have a magnifying glass at the bottom left of your map (M key for the map) window, to view details a bit better

- Hotbars (or “quickbars”): forget AO's flexible and customizable interface. SWTOR's hud is very limited.
You can have have 4 hotbars with fixed positions:
    • - main hotbar, bottom of screen
      - secondary hotbar under main one: unfolds if you click the “+” sign on main hotbar
      - 2 fixed bars on each side of the screen: use the Preferences menu (ESC key) to make them appear
- Pets: “companion” is the word in SWTOR for pets. They are NPC's following and helping you, with various skills. They are powerful and you NEED them.
Companions are given by your main quest line.
They can be human beings, humanoids, droids
They are specific to each profession (class)
The first one will be found around level 7/8

- How do I get a girl / boyfriend companion (pet): at relatively high level, you'll start to get new “companions”, one of them is a person with a “romance” feature in dialogues.

- Is there a mob calm / stun ?
Jedi Councelor and Sith Inquisitor have a mob stun that lands at 100% on mobs and bosses (at least so far): you make the mob levitate for one minute and it will do nothing. Damage breaks the stun.

Great idea for a thread =D> Here is some blog that is a similar concept. I haven't really looked through the various tips yet, but figured Id post it.

Trooper Stun
Trooper also has a stun also, it seems too short-lived to be of much use. There may be more / improved stun abilities down the road for Troopers, I don't know yet.

Auto & Area Looting
There is an option for "Auto Loot" and "Area Loot" available in the preferences. They are very nice especially in soloing. One thing though: I was teamed last night and had auto looting on. I right clicked a dead mob and auto looted all the stuff, including a commendation. It would have been nice to be able to offer that commendation to my friend instead of just taking it.

Pushback

from
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/951199-s ... c/61338884

Being hit and interrupted while casting. It's your pushback. So if you're casting something and there's a target hitting you, that 2.6 cast is going to be more then 2.6 seconds. If you have abilities in pushback, it will allow you to cast while being hit and not get that much of a pushback. Hope I explained it right.

In Nar-Shaddaa, the Cantina is sometimes hard to find. It is located in the extreme South-East corner of the map of The Promenade and there is only a small corridors and some steps to get to it although it's a very large cantina. (Of course, you just want to go there to be in a rest zone, and not for buying the Leia slave outfit from the social vendor, don't you?!)

In space combat, keeping your left mouse button pressed fires your blasters non-stop.

For the 5 top space missions or so, you NEED to get 2 more upgrades for your ship:
- The EMP
- and mostly the device allowing you to reroute power to blasters or to shields, reinforcing the balsters fire or the shields depending on what you need (damage or survivability) at a moment.

To defeat the Sith Stark in the mission "Fearless" (Jedi Consular Class quest line), you really need to be level 45; have you AND Nadia Grell well equipped (improve nadia's equipment); and figure out when Stark is going to launch his "bombing in a row" attack to interrupt it with you Mind Snap power. During a fight, Stark shouldn't use it more than 2 times.
As soon as the mission begins, you have Nadia forever and you can postpone the mission and go for some shopping for her equipment and even level on planets.

You can somewhat customize your companions (haircut, hair color, general look, tatoos,...à. This is expensive and not really great but fashion victimes will love it. The customization for a companion are usually onee or two planets fater the one you get your companion from. They are sold by the Companion Customization vendor, in Cantinas, sometimes in markets. A social level is sometimes required (need to have done enough teams.)
